Approximately 7.4 million of the overall 8.2 million farm families in Pakistan are categorized as smallholder farmers, owning less than 12.5 acres (5 hectares) of land. About 65% of Pakistan's population, mostly in rural areas, rely on agriculture for their livelihood.
